Experience the World Heritage listed Vega Islands

Experience the World Heritage listed Vega Islands

Small shelters for eider ducks that for 1,500 years have almost been like a domestic animal. It is this sustainable tradition that has given it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This excursion is definitely one of the major highlights of the southbound cruise along the coast

The people of the Vega Islands make small shelters for the birds, and when the birds leave the nests, the down that is left behind is collected and used to make the softest, warmest quilts and pillows.

This tradition is so special and important that it has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can learn more about the symbiotic relationship between birds and the locals on a visit to the Vega World Heritage Centre, which opened in 2019.

The journey there is by speedboat to Sandnessjøen through a myriad of small islets and skerries in an archipelago of outcrops and rocks alternating with white beaches and turquoise sea water.

After the visit to the world heritage site on Vega, the journey continues to Brønnøysund where you board the Havila Voyages again.
